Ohio State University
African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, USA
May 28 - 31, 2018

FROM HISTORICAL TRAUMA TO CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

The International Festival of "Africana Psychology" is a vast scientific, cultural, multidisciplinary bi-annual event focusing on the topic of the influence of specific ways of being and knowing that shape the psychology of people of African ancestry.

Its purpose is to advocate for the development of this approach in the conceptualization of psychological phenomena and practice of mental health care. This festival was conceived by the House of Psychology, Arts & Therapies and the Association Sikotwomatis ak Afrikanite (SITWOMAFRIKA), an Institute of Research on the Trauma of Slavery and Colonization and Africana Psychology established in Haiti in 2015 under the leadership of Dr. Judite Blanc, Lecturer at the State University of Haiti. The proceedings of the first edition of this Festival titled: "Afro-Caribbean Thought and (Psycho)Trauma of Slavery and Colonization" were published in October 2017 at the Editions Sciences bien commun in Canada.
In 2018 with support from the Transnational Black Citizenship Discovery Theme Project at The Ohio State University African American and African Studies Community Extension Center (OSU in the United States), Dr. Judite Blanc of the State University of Haiti worked with Dr. Linda James Myers to join the organization for four days of scientific, artistic and cultural activities in Columbus, Ohio and Port-au-Prince from May 28 to 31, 2018, on the theme: FROM HISTORICAL TRAUMA TO CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

1)  Shed light on the issues of creativity and innovation in the context of the historic trauma propagated by exposure to chattel enslavement and colonization in contemporary communities of people of African ancestry;
2)   Contribute to (re)emergence and promotion of paradigms, tools, methods, and creative/innovative education that will be useful to the growth and development of our contemporary communities.
